Drop-in or Undermount Sink? Differences and Tips

A sink is an essential element in every kitchen. Available devices on the market can vary in color, shape, or size, but also in the installation method. The most popular installation methods are drop-in sinks placed on the surface of the kitchen cabinet and undermount sinks installed flush with the countertop. The installation method of the sink does not affect its later use, and undermount sinks are as functional as drop-in sinks.

Drop-in Sink – When is this Installation Method Better?

A drop-in sink is the most commonly found solution, which is relatively inexpensive and universal. Sinks mounted on kitchen cabinets are available in standard sizes that fit the majority of mass-produced cabinets. Drop-in sinks can be purchased in sizes from 40 to even 80 cm, and there are both single and double bowl models.

The installation of such a sink takes very little time; it is simply placed on the cabinet, and its upper surface is covered with sanitary silicone, which simultaneously secures the sink and seals the mounting spots. Once the sink is placed, it is good to evenly weigh it down for the time needed for the silicone to bond with the edges of the sink and the cabinet's surface. Undermount Sinks – For Custom-Made Cabinets

When you decide on a kitchen countertop, the best solution will be an undermount sink. Installing such a device requires more effort than with a drop-in sink. To install it, a precise hole must be cut in the kitchen countertop. First, the level of the countertop needs to be checked, then the shape of the countertop is traced, and the distance from the contour of the countertop to the mounting brackets is measured. Only then can the inner contour be traced, according to which the hole will be cut for the sink.

The above tasks require not only skill but also specialized tools; it is not an easy installation, so it is worth leaving it to professionals. Precise cutting of the hole is possible with various types of kitchen countertops. An undermount sink is installed using mounting clips, which must be firmly tightened after placing the sink in the cut-out hole. As you can see, the question of whether to choose a drop-in sink or an undermount sink involves a clear complication related to installation – this also needs to be taken into consideration!

Drop-in or Undermount Sink?

The decision on which type of sink to choose largely depends on how the kitchen is arranged, mainly whether it has a custom-made countertop or if the space has been equipped using ready-made furniture sets. In the case of a purchased cabinet set, a drop-in sink would definitely be a better choice, as its edge would be slightly above the surface of the cabinet. The installation of this type of sink is very easy.

If you want a countertop in which the sink is flush with its surface, then a drop-in sink is the better choice. This involves the necessity of cutting an appropriate hole in the countertop, and therefore also the need to seek professional help. Placing the sink in the countertop requires a lot of precision and accuracy. Unfortunately, this usually generates additional costs, but at the same time guarantees an exceptional effect.
