Which linear drain to choose?

Many people currently arranging or renovating their bathrooms opt for a modern (and very convenient) solution in the form of a linear drain. However, in some cases, the installation of such a drain may make water drainage difficult - and consequently, keeping the shower area clean may be troublesome. When choosing this product, the issue of its installation is also important, as it can be installed both in the floor and in the wall. So which linear drain to choose?

What is a linear drain?

A linear drain is one of the solutions that works perfectly in a modern bathroom. It is worth remembering that when arranging or renovating a bathroom, we need to consider a linear drain as early as the design stage - in this case, we do not invest in the traditional solution of a shower tray and shower cabin - this type of drain is installed directly in the floor or wall. Moreover, at this stage, it will be easier for us to determine the height of the floor, under which the entire drain and siphon must fit without problems - the amount of space we allocate for installation is crucial in this case. A large number of available shower siphons are vertical siphons - recently, horizontal siphons have also become available: they are maximally shortened, allowing us to install them low.

A linear drain is an aesthetically pleasing and fashionable solution that works best in modern bathrooms - we do not install a traditional shower tray here; the shower cabin is installed directly in the floor. A linear drain gives us more possibilities when it comes to bathroom arrangement and makes it look design-oriented. However, it is essential to remember that this type of drain can sometimes get clogged, and we need to have appropriate access to it to clean or repair it. If we cannot quickly repair the drain, its complete dismantling may be necessary, which involves significant additional costs.

Types of linear drains

Various types of linear drains are available on the market, and for those not familiar with them, choosing the right installation can be quite a challenge. What parameters differentiate linear drains?

  1. Installation method: a linear drain can be installed in the floor or in the wall, with the former being the most commonly used solution. However, sometimes the floor height does not allow for that - the siphon and the entire drain frame must fit under it. An alternative is a wall-mounted drain. Recently, horizontal siphon models, which also work well with low floors, can be found on the market.
  2. Flow rate: this is an extremely important parameter. It refers to how much water a specific model can drain in a given time. The flow rate is usually expressed in liters per minute, and it should be compared with the performance of the entire shower set.
  3. Shape of the drain: contrary to appearances, not all linear drains have a simple shape. There are also corner or curved models available, which provide more installation options, and therefore, more possibilities for arranging our bathroom.

Of course, aside from these technical parameters, we must not forget about the visual aspect - after all, the linear drain we choose should serve us for many years and should blend well with the entire bathroom arrangement.

Finishing of linear drains

The main element of the linear drain that we see at first glance is the cover, also known as the grill. It is precisely this cover that greatly influences the purchase of a given model and - especially since it has a significant impact on the final appearance of the bathroom. That is why it is essential to pay attention to its appearance and choose the appropriate product. The cheapest solution is a grate, which not only covers the entire drain but also collects all possible residues and debris. Meanwhile, the most commonly used in this case are stainless steel grates with cutouts of various shapes - here you can find really interesting and designer solutions that can change the character of the room. Those who care about high aesthetics can choose linear drains that can be covered with bathroom tiles, making them practically invisible. Another option - good for fans of unusual solutions - is LED lighting, which gives the bathroom a truly modern character.

When choosing a solution such as a linear drain, one cannot forget about selecting appropriate bathroom tiles - they fulfill not only a practical function but also a decorative one. In this case, it is advisable to choose tiles with a class III or IV abrasion resistance - they are not porous, making them easy to clean, and moreover, they have anti-slip properties.
