Shower heads are a type of very fashionable and effective shower accessories. Due to increasingly interesting designs and a variety of colors, they quickly become a decorative element of the bathroom. It is best to plan the installation of the shower head before arranging the bathroom; otherwise, we will face a thorough renovation, including breaking tiles at least on one of the walls. But what to do if we already have a bathroom and have dreamed of a shower head? How to install it?
Types of Shower Heads Based on Installation Method
When deciding to install a shower head in the bathroom, we have various options for these devices. Our choice primarily depends on the place and method of installation. In other words, to install a shower head, we must first choose a specific model. We can choose from three types of shower heads:
- Wall-mounted fixed or adjustable shower head. The fixed wall-mounted shower head is placed on a rod or shower panel mounted on the wall and permanently connected to the shower faucet. In the case of an adjustable wall-mounted shower head, we deal with a shower head mounted in the place of a traditional hand shower. This shower head is attached to a rod and connected to the faucet using a flexible hose. It practically fulfills the same functions as a traditional hand shower; it is just significantly larger than it.
- Recessed wall-mounted shower head – all construction elements are hidden behind the tiles. On the outside, only the frame, external faucet, and shower head are visible.
- Recessed ceiling-mounted shower head - it is installed in a suspended ceiling. This is definitely the most modern solution, used in large shower cabins or bathrooms with a designated shower area.
Installing a Wall-mounted Shower Head
Installing a shower head in a bathroom that has already been arranged is not exactly difficult, but it also does not provide many arrangement options. If we do not intend to disturb the wall structure or break tiles, we can only choose wall-mounted shower heads. To existing wall pipes supplying hot and cold water, as well as the faucet located at a height of about 120 cm, we can connect the simplest and cheapest shower head. In this option, an additional hand shower along with a switch is mounted on the vertical shower head pipe.
A slightly more expensive wall-mounted version is a complete set containing a thermostatic shower faucet. In this case, both the vertical shower head pipe and the hand shower can be directly connected to the faucet. Depending on the construction and price of the set, the pipe may be adjustable, and the shower head may be equipped with a ball joint. This allows the shower head to be turned right or left and the angle of inclination of the head to be adjusted to direct the water stream in the desired direction. Some more expensive models of shower heads have hand showers equipped with a button that regulates the water flow. At what height should such a shower head be mounted? This depends on many factors, and we address this issue at the end of the article.
How to Install a Recessed Shower Head?
As mentioned earlier, installing a recessed shower head requires radical steps. By hiding the recessed battery and all construction elements in the wall, we save a lot of space and achieve a modern style of bathroom arrangement. The only visible element will be the handle attached to the wall or ceiling and the shower head, whose original appearance, color or shape will enhance the aesthetic value of the room.
The first stage of work is the installation of the recessed faucet. In the shower cabin, the faucet should be located at a height of about 120 cm above the floor, and the shower head at 210-220 cm. In the chiseled groove, the recessed faucet element is secured, and to the place where the water mixer will be located, supply pipes are brought.
The next step is chiseling grooves in the wall where the pipes connecting the shower head with the recessed faucet part will be embedded. If there are other elements in the shower set, such as a hand shower with a shower rod or holder, water jets for hydromassage, or a bathtub spout, grooves for pipes supplying water to all additional elements should be chiselled. It is also important that a faucet with a switch for several output elements is used.
The last step is the installation of the visible elements. The shower head can be mounted on the wall of the cabin (using a special holder) or in the central point of the shower cabin on the ceiling. It can also be mounted over the bathtub.
At What Height Should We Install the Shower Head in the Shower Cabin?
The height at which to install the shower head depends on its type, position, and method of installation. The wall-mounted shower head is usually installed in small shower cabins at such a height that all household members can use it freely. It is assumed that for the height of the tallest user, about 40 cm is added. At the same time, one must also consider the height of the shower cabin to ensure that the water stream does not overflow over its walls.
The ceiling-mounted shower head should be installed in the central point of a large shower cabin at a height of 210-220 cm. This way, the flowing water stream provides a pleasant shower for every participant, regardless of their size. And at what height should a shower set be installed in the case of a bathtub? Of course, the best point on the wall is below the upper edge of the shower curtain. You should also take care to ensure easy access to the faucet and shower head.
