What to pay particular attention to when choosing a toilet?

Arranging a functional and elegant bathroom and toilet is a process worth dedicating some time to. After all, it's not something we want to repeat in a few years. Well-chosen, functional equipment guarantees a beautiful and well-equipped, but above all fully functional room. In the toilet market, we can choose between wall-hung WC bowls with low or high-level flush, mounted on a concealed frame or on the wall above the toilet. There are also standing WC bowls in compact form, where the water tank is an integral part of the WC set. When choosing the most convenient solution, it's worth considering a few options.

Horizontal or Vertical

The first thing to pay attention to is the method of connection to the sewage system. If the sewage approach is installed in the wall, you should purchase a bowl with a horizontal outlet (the so-called Poznań). An approach installed in the floor requires a bowl with a vertical outlet (the so-called Warsaw). There are also toilets with a universal approach, which can be easily mounted to either type of sewage approach.

A Standard or Compact Standing Bowl

In classic bathrooms, standing bowls placed directly on the floor were the most commonly used solution. With standing WC bowls, the pipes connecting the bowl with the outlet, water supply, and reservoir are visible. This is not the most aesthetically pleasing solution because dust accumulates on the pipes, and cobwebs may also appear. This is an additional area that needs attention when cleaning the bathroom. Fortunately, nowadays the market offers another solution – the so-called compact, which is a sensible option in smaller bathrooms. In this case, the WC bowl and water tank form an integral unit. This is very practical as everything – the toilet and reservoir – is in one device. Such a WC bowl only needs to be fixed in the appropriate spot on the floor and connected to the water supply. The biggest advantage of this solution is that it is very stable and easy to keep clean. The variety of shapes means you can always choose a unique compact for a renovated bathroom. This type of solution works in both modern and classic bathrooms – wherever there is a need to save a bit of space and ensure aesthetics.

Choosing this option means that no additional installation costs are incurred, as the installation of a standing WC bowl is very simple. In a solution other than the compact additional reservoir is mounted. The water tank only needs to be attached to the wall and connected with appropriate water installations that will supply water to the WC bowl.

Choose the Type of Flush

For toilets installed without a frame, one must choose the appropriate flushing mechanism. Standing bowls can be equipped with a low or high-level flush, referring to the location of the reservoir – high or just above the bowl. In the case of choosing a high-level flush, the water tank can even be mounted under the ceiling, creating additional space on the wall for shelves. In such solutions, the tank does not need to be close to the toilet. This allows for maneuvering installation options to make the bathroom as functional as possible. However, not everyone likes a long pipe connecting the reservoir to the toilet and a string or chain for flushing water.

A low-level flush bowl takes up a bit more space, but there is no vertical pipe running up the wall. The low-level flush can be used as an additional shelf and can be mounted directly above the toilet or slightly to the side, easily adapting the entire setup even to a very small toilet. WC bowls with low or high-level flush give many possibilities, which are worth taking advantage of when generating additional usable surfaces. With such solutions, pipes are visible, but it is not worth discouraging immediately, as they perfectly emphasize a retro design.

Wall-mounted Bowl

Nowadays, wall-hung toilet bowls on concealed frames are much more frequently encountered solutions. These solutions are much more convenient in terms of aesthetics and room cleanliness. The frame of the hanging bowl is enclosed with either bricks or plasterboard panels, creating an installation wall about 20 cm thick, which can serve as a functional ledge. All installations, including the reservoir, are hidden behind the wall, with only a flushing button visible. This solution significantly increases the aesthetics of the toilet; instead of pipes and fittings, a flat surface is visible, making it easy to keep clean.

What Else to Pay Attention To

From the user's comfort point of view, it's important to check what they are made of, whether they are properly soundproofed, and how they are built – whether they have a rim or not. Currently, rimless bowls are increasingly popular, the absence of a rim under which dirt and bacteria can accumulate significantly raises the hygiene level in the toilet. Equally important are the flushes that allow effective water flushing. Usually, a reservoir holds about 6 liters of water, used to flush the toilet, unless a model with a dual-button flush is chosen. This allows choosing between flushing the entire capacity or half. An economical flush can also be equipped with a stop button, allowing to stop the water flush at any time. This significantly reduces water consumption, making it an environmentally and economically beneficial solution.

The last thing to pay attention to when choosing a toilet is a matching toilet seat. Here, you can choose from various materials and colors of the seats. The shape needs to fit the bowl owned, other elements can be selected to best complement the bathroom decoration. Although seats come in various colors, the classic white, which fits any room, is the most commonly chosen.

Wealthy individuals and those who like technical innovations may choose to equip their toilet with a modern bidet seat. This will easily help maintain the highest hygiene standards in intimate areas.
