The foundation of bathroom equipment is bathroom ceramics, which includes a washbasin, toilet bowl, bathtub, and shower set. When deciding on a shower enclosure, we have the choice of a shower with or without a tray. Shower trays are divided not only by material but also by shape, size, or color.
Rectangular Shower Trays
Rectangular shower trays are available in many different sizes. The longer side of the tray can range from 100 to 180 cm, while the shorter side ranges from 70 to 90 cm. We also have the choice of models in various heights – from 2.6 to 11 cm. There are also trays available on the market that are designed to be installed flush with the floor or built into the floor. The choice depends on what we expect from a shower tray and the bathroom interior. A rectangular tray provides more space and consequently more freedom of movement during a shower. A rectangular tray is certainly a combination of modern design with a simple, minimalist form, fitting both industrial and traditional interiors. The bathroom area is a kind of combination where we want to maintain high design but also functionality, so this hardware option will meet our expectations 100%.
When choosing a rectangular tray, it's worth paying attention to the position of the drain. If we want the tray to be placed low, we should check the positioning of the siphon pipe to the sewage system. This is a very important aspect, as a poorly chosen siphon for the tray and incorrect placement will result in slower water drainage from the tray, leading to various types of failures, which can generate significant costs related to repairing the defect and calling a specialist.
Deep Shower Trays – Functionality and Safety
Standard deep trays for shower enclosures have a depth of 5 to 11 cm. This value is measured from the bottom of the tray to its top edge. A deep tray is a practical solution for those who cannot install a lower tray due to a small bathroom. Remember that a higher tray is a multifunctional solution that can serve additional purposes – you can bathe a child in it, soak laundry, or wash your child's toys. Some deep trays come with a factory-formed seat that can serve as a spacious shelf but is also an ideal option for the elderly or disabled. However, entering a high tray or getting out of it won't be comfortable for an older person or someone with mobility issues, so it's worth considering this aspect when choosing a specific model.
The high plastic enclosure doesn't always look aesthetically pleasing in the bathroom – in modern interiors, a flat tray is definitely better. If we decide on a deep version, it's worth choosing models with a styrofoam base that can be finished with any chosen ceramic tiles. The bathroom then acquires an aesthetically pleasing and very modern look.
Shallow Shower Trays – Modernity and Convenience
People who love minimalist solutions in their bathroom should pay attention to shallow trays that are flush with the surface or slightly protrude above the floor level. It looks very attractive and modern, but you have to think about a shallow tray already at the design stage of the bathroom – this way, you will avoid costly renovations, which often involve making larger or smaller changes to the sewage installation.
Shallow trays usually range from 3 to 3.5 cm in height, but there are also models recessed into the floor, protruding above its level by 1-2 cm. Shallow trays in the bathroom not only look much more modern but also optically enlarge the space in the bathroom, making them ideal for small spaces where every centimeter is precious. Additionally, they are universal, which means they will also perform excellently in quite large interiors – it is worth choosing a slightly larger model in this case, which won't disrupt the bathroom's proportions and simultaneously guarantees maximum comfort during daily bathing. Entering and exiting a cabin equipped with a shallow tray won't be a problem for anyone – the elderly or disabled will feel true comfort and independence, just like children.
Modern Design or Bold Color
Well-known manufacturers of bathroom fixtures and ceramics increasingly offer us products inspired by the latest trends, which often resemble true works of applied art. The same goes for trays, which are available in many different stylistic versions – on the market, you can already find not only classic rectangular or square trays but also semicircular ones intended for corner installation.
Increasingly, fixture designers are moving away from universal white in favor of other, bolder colors – for example, models in shades of gray will fit perfectly with industrial and loft-style interiors, while black trays will work excellently as a stylish addition to elegant and more extravagant rooms. A recent hit in the last few seasons are trays that imitate natural stone or cement – such solutions should be well thought out, as they are intended for bathrooms with a coherent, modern style.
Shower trays also differ from each other in the material from which they are made. Although most of them are made of durable and damage-resistant sanitary acrylic, you can also increasingly find models:
- Steel – coated with special enamel resistant to impacts and abrasion, often also with an additional anti-slip layer.
- Ceramic – more stable and durable than acrylic trays. They do not require a frame for installation as they are attached directly to the floor.
- Mineral – elegant and pleasant to the touch, they absorb water impacts and retain heat well. Their downside is the high price – you also need to remember regular polishing and periodic sealing.
- Composite – made of marble, plastics, and resin. Extremely durable, damage-resistant – bacteria and fungi do not develop on their surface. The downside is the high price.
