Do you need to clean a soap dish?

Bathroom accessories need regular cleaning - cleaning the soap dish is particularly important. Soap is used several times a day, whenever we wash our hands, meaning it comes into contact with many microorganisms. Additionally, wet hands cause it to unsightly dissolve in the soap dish. How and with what should you clean soap dishes?

Frequent hand washing as a hygiene foundation

It is no surprise that regular hand washing is the foundation of hygiene. This is taught to school children and was especially emphasized with the rise of coronavirus infection risks. It's hard to imagine visiting a public restroom without immediately using soap afterwards. Using good quality soap helps eliminate skin infections and does not dry it out. Although it seems obvious, it is important to remember that this basic procedure actually removes bacteria and protects us from many diseases.

Soap dispenser or soap dish - which to choose?

The choice really depends on your preferred type of soap: liquid soap or bar soap? Bars are more ecological as they are packaged in paper boxes, avoiding plastic packaging each time. They do have downsides - after several uses, they get soft and lose their aesthetic appeal. Water collects in the soap dish, which isn't hygienic or visually appealing.

Liquid soap is more convenient aesthetically, as frequent hand washing doesn't alter its appearance. To give your bathroom character, you can opt for a designer dispenser that complements the rest of the interior when placed on the sink.

Soap dish with drainer

If you like washing your hands with bar soap, a soap dish with a drainer can minimize the problem of water accumulation. It's a convenient solution because all the water and dissolved soap drain off. There are two types of these soap dishes: with a container and baskets with silicone handles that attach to the wall. These soap dishes also need cleaning, but they look more aesthetic, and the soap placed on them doesn't dissolve or lose its properties.

How to maintain a soap dish?

Regularity is key! Glass soap dishes should be cleaned almost after every hand or face wash. Usually, warm water and scrubbing off any residue will suffice, usually at the edge of the soap dish. If lime scale has accumulated from too much water, you can use a descaling agent, but usually, such invasive products are not needed. Black and dark soap dishes are the hardest to clean as soap residue is most visible on them.

Hair and dust can also collect on the soap dish - the more frequently it is wiped, the more hygienic it is to use the soap on it - especially for face washing. A liquid soap dispenser also needs wiping, as contact with water causes streaks. Containers with streaks on the sink do not look aesthetic. It's best to use a mild descaling agent for cleaning, as water alone won't remove streaks.

Hand washing is a basic hygiene procedure that needs no convincing. Remember also to clean the soap dish to prevent it from becoming a germ collection spot. Usually, water is sufficient, and for more stubborn streaks, mild chemical agents.
