bathroom radiator with bottom connection

What Types of Connections Do Bathroom Radiators Have?

Radiators vary not only in color or shape but also in terms of connection. We distinguish:

  • bathroom radiators with bottom connection - most commonly used in new buildings; water is supplied and removed through pipes mounted at the bottom of the radiator, usually on the right side, although left-sided and mid-length radiators are also offered on the market,

  • bathroom radiators with side connection - water is supplied and removed via nipples located on the side of the radiator (either right or left); this installation method is the least invasive as it uses the old connection, eliminating the need to chisel walls and install new pipes,

  • bathroom radiators with cross connection - water is supplied from the top and removed from the bottom on the opposite side of the radiator; this type of connection is mainly used for long radiators ensuring an even temperature distribution across their entire surface.

How to Connect a Bathroom Radiator with Bottom Supply?

The way you connect a radiator affects its proper operation, but also the convenience of cleaning and room aesthetics. A bathroom radiator can be installed on the wall or placed on special stands on the floor. Each radiator is connected to the central heating system by two pipes: a supply pipe, which brings hot water from the heat source, and a return pipe, which removes cooled water to the system. In the case of bottom connection radiators, both pipes connect to the nipples located in the radiator, at the bottom, at the right or left edge.

Where is the Supply on a Bathroom Radiator?

The supply for a bathroom radiator with a bottom connection can be located in the center of the device or on its left or right side. The side of the connection, whether the supply is brought from the right or left side, doesn't matter. A thermostatic valve is placed on the supply pipe, and a cut-off valve on the return pipe.

Radiator with Bottom Connection - What Material Could It Be Made Of?

Bathroom radiators (both decorative and standard radiators) are currently made mainly from three materials: steel, aluminum, and cast iron. The first two materials are used frequently nowadays because they heat up quickly and conduct heat well. Cast iron radiators are chosen when the bathroom is designed in a retro style.

What power supply methods do bottom-connected radiators have? Well, bathroom radiators are divided into three main types:

  • Water - these are connected to the central heating system like regular radiators. Unfortunately, they don't work outside the heating season.

  • Water-electrical - they are connected to the central heating system like water radiators. However, they have an additional electric heater, allowing them to be used year-round.

  • Electric - they have low power, so they cannot heat the bathroom alone. They are suitable for small spaces and for supplementing heating in rooms with another type of heating installed. Installing an electric radiator is very simple as you just need to plug it into an outlet. It's an excellent solution, especially in months when central heating is not yet running.

Which Radiator to Choose for the Bathroom?

Nowadays, bathroom radiators represent a very wide range of products. They can be tailored regarding the type of connection, although the appearance is most often considered. There are models available in various colors and forms. As for color, the white bathroom radiator is still the most popular choice as it fits almost all bathrooms. Black radiators are increasingly chosen, as they can be matched to interiors in an industrial or minimalist style. A very trendy color for several seasons is chrome - such finished radiators fit perfectly in an elegant glamour style - they can be matched with the color scheme of the fixtures. However, this is not all that radiator manufacturers offer.

In terms of shape, the ladder bathroom radiator, which consists of horizontal tubes connected by collectors, works very well in bathrooms. It is extremely convenient as it replaces a towel rack. An alternative is the panel radiator, which is somewhat less functional as it’s not possible to hang towels or small garments on it to dry.

A very designer choice is opting for a decorative bathroom radiator. Such models can take various shapes: from rounded tubes to honeycombs or geometric, avant-garde forms. The great availability of various radiators allows them to be perfectly matched to a bathroom arrangement.
