Sink Size - Which One to Choose?

There is a wide selection of sink models, colours, and sizes available on the market. You can choose from sinks made from various materials, in different shapes. However, one of the most important features to pay attention to when buying a new sink for your kitchen is its size. This depends on the amount of space in the kitchen and on the width of the cabinet or countertop where you want to install it. The method of installation is also important since the larger the sink, the heavier it may be, and thus it will require a more solid base.

Modern Single-Bowl Sinks

A kitchen must be mainly designed to be functional, and this also applies to the sink, which is an essential element of its equipment. Even if a dishwasher has dominated your kitchen for years, you surely know that a sink always comes in handy. Most people opt for a single-bowl sink, as these are most commonly available in the interior equipment market. It is useful, even if you have a dishwasher you use every day.

This is an ideal solution for a small kitchen; you will easily find models with a width of less than 50 cm, allowing you to place the sink on the surface of even a small cabinet or narrow worktop. This size of sink allows for convenient washing of dishes and pots. If you want to save even more space in the kitchen, you can choose a small corner sink, which works well not only in small kitchens but also in kitchenette areas.

How to Choose a Kitchen Sink - Size Matters

If you want to choose the right sink size for your kitchen, you should consider the following factors:

  • the size of the kitchen or kitchenette,

  • frequency of sink usage,

  • budget allocated for purchasing a sink,

  • the method of sink installation.

People with limited budgets most often choose a single-bowl stainless steel sink. This is a solid and not too expensive solution. If you cook a lot and therefore frequently wash up and wash food items needed for meal preparation in the sink, opt for a large sink with two bowls. As for the sink's dimensions, they should be matched to the kitchen's size. An overly large sink in a tiny kitchen will make it difficult to use comfortably, whereas a too-small sink will be "lost" in a large kitchen.

Granite or Other Sinks?

If you don't know what type of sink to choose, it's essential to familiarise yourself with the characteristics of individual models. Currently, medium-sized granite sinks, complemented with a functional drainer, are probably the most popular choices. A properly chosen sink facilitates the organisation of the washing area, and placing a drainer on its left or right side allows for the expansion of the working area. You can place dirty dishes and pots waiting to be washed on it. Granite sinks are resistant to mechanical damages and high temperatures and are also difficult to scratch.

Steel sinks are cheaper than those made of granite, but they are available in a limited colour range. We have both double-bowl sinks and single-bowl sinks, as well as one and a half-bowled sinks. Their maintenance, similar to granite sinks, does not require special treatments. However, it is advisable to remember to wipe the sink dry after each use. Whether we choose granite, ceramic, or steel sinks, the sink size should be matched for comfortable washing of dishes.

The Perfect Sink Doesn't Exist

Choosing a sink is an important decision because it is purchased for a longer period. Therefore, it's worth paying attention to both the utility features and its functionality. Whether you need a single or double-bowl sink, you need to consider the available space. In a kitchenette, under-mount sinks work perfectly, while in a larger kitchen, you can afford drop-in sinks or top-mounted sinks that are integrated with a section of the countertop. If you want a sink that meets your expectations, you must remember that both the sink's shape, its colour, and its size matter.
