Granit, Steel, or Ceramic Sink?

A sink, an essential piece of equipment without which a functional kitchen is hard to imagine. If you're planning a renovation or are at the stage of planning equipment for a new kitchen, you'll face the challenge of choosing a sink. Even if you don't cook much daily and wash dishes in a dishwasher, you can't forgo this important kitchen equipment. In our text, we'll introduce you to several types of sinks that are currently quite popular and help you find an answer to the question of which is better: a granite sink, a ceramic sink, or a steel sink?

Types of the Most Popular Sinks

When choosing a sink, most people first pay attention to its size. This is obviously very important, as different kitchens have different arrangement possibilities. In a large space, you can accommodate a large two-bowl sink, while in a small kitchenette, a tiny sink might fit, often even without a drainer.

The second feature many consider is the sink's colour. This is also an important issue because the sink is purchased once for a long time and should match the rest of the kitchen equipment colour-wise. A few years ago, white ceramic sinks and steel sinks were the most commonly chosen. Both colours can be considered rather universal, which might explain their popularity. Today, modern technology allows us to choose from a much wider colour range. The last but equally important feature to remember when buying a sink is the material it's made from.

What Material Sink to Choose?

For years, the kitchen accessory market was dominated by steel sinks, with few opting for ceramic ones. We all know kitchen sinks are exposed to various mechanical damage, for instance, due to careless placement of heavy pots and sharp cutlery. Besides, hot water and fluids that could discolour the sink walls are often poured into them.

Sink manufacturers strive to meet customer expectations, creating new models from various materials. Most stores now offer:

  • granite sinks,

  • ceramic sinks,

  • stainless steel sinks,

  • marble sinks.

We will try to outline the characteristics of different materials from which a kitchen sink can be made. This will certainly make it easier for you to choose the right equipment for your kitchen.

Ceramic Sink, Traditional and Elegant

Ceramic sinks remain consistently popular among customers, although they belong to a bit higher price range. These types of sinks are made from clay fired at very high temperatures, covered with a glaze layer. This process creates a very durable material resistant to impacts, temperature fluctuations, non-discolouring, and non-fading. In the case of white ceramic sinks, they do not acquire a yellowish hue over time.

Cleaning the smooth surface of a ceramic sink does not require purchasing special chemical cleaners. An attractive appearance of ceramics in a chosen colour will become a real decoration of your kitchen. Ceramics are more scratch-resistant than sinks made of granite and other materials.

Granite Sink, Stylish and Durable

Granite sinks are appreciated for their unique style and wide range of colours, and of course, for durability. A granite sink, sometimes called stone or composite, is made from a mixture of quartz and epoxy resin. This combination allows for a beautiful stone appearance, perfectly imitating natural stone, as well as great durability and resistance to both high and low temperatures

A granite sink is characterised by very high hardness, making it very resistant to mechanical damages, of which the kitchen is not particularly forgiving. Proof of their durability is that manufacturers sometimes offer guarantees for as long as 30 years. Besides, a granite sink is easy to keep clean. Just remember not to leave fluids or products with strong colouring properties in it. In case of staining, you can remove them with standard chemical cleaners.

Steel Sink, Traditional and Durable Solution for Your Kitchen

The steel sink is a solution that will probably never go out of fashion. Those who choose to buy one highlight the durability and quality of stainless steel. This material withstands high temperatures well and is relatively resistant to damage from standard use. It is not as scratch-resistant as a granite or ceramic sink, but a kitchen equipped with such a sink will be just as functional.

Stainless steel is generally only available in traditional colour, but steel sinks come in many shapes and sizes. Individual models may also differ in finish, they can be smooth with a gloss, matte, or have a texture similar to linen.

As you can see, we can choose from various types of sinks made from different materials. Which one will work best in your kitchen depends on your individual expectations and budget. The most expensive are ceramic kitchen sinks, slightly cheaper is a granite sink, and the most budget-friendly is the steel sink.
