Scratched granite sink: how to remove scratches?

A granite sink is becoming an increasingly popular choice for kitchen finishes. Many people opt to purchase a sink made of graphite because it not only looks beautiful but is also highly durable and importantly, cheaper than ceramic or marble sinks. Additionally, cleaning a granite sink is usually not too much trouble. However, sometimes minor scratches can appear on the surface of a granite sink. How can this be remedied? Check out our tried-and-tested methods.

Proper care for a granite sink

A granite sink is valued for being very resistant to mechanical damage, streaks, or potential discoloration. With proper care, it can last for many years, staying in perfect condition. However, it's worth remembering some rules that will let you enjoy a beautiful sink for a really long time. When washing dishes and heavy pots, place a rubber mat at the bottom, this will help protect the sink bottom from scratches.

Also, be mindful not to leave food and drink residues for a long time, especially if they contain strong coloring substances. This includes pieces of beets, berries, coffee grounds, or tea leaves, or red wine. Left at the bottom of the sink, they can penetrate the composite structure, permanently changing its color. To prevent this, it's good to ensure the sink's surface is protected. The simplest method is sink impregnation – all you need is regular oil.

Remove scratches from the granite sink

The “treatment” should proceed as follows:

  • wash the sink thoroughly with dishwashing liquid and rinse it thoroughly,

  • dry the sink basin, preferably with a paper towel,

  • spray the sink surface with a granite care product, aim for a uniformly covering film,

  • after about 10 minutes, wipe the sink dry and leave it for at least four hours,

  • after this time, you can use your sink freely.

In this way, you will get rid of small scratches on the walls and the bottom of the granite sink, to keep the effect permanent, it’s worth repeating this procedure regularly.

How to prevent scratching the granite sink?

Granite sinks are known for their durability, but they must be handled properly. When washing dishes and heavy pots, pay attention to avoid sliding them across the bottom of the sink basin. Do not throw cutlery or other kitchen accessories into it with force either. It is also good to pay attention to the cleaning agents you choose for the sink. Avoid abrasive cleaners, as the baking soda and polishing granules they contain could, with regular use, lead to the scratching of the sink’s surface.

The safest option for the structure of the sink is to use soft sponges instead of abrasive pads or scouring pads. Various stains can be removed using cloths soaked in cleaning liquid and warm water. It’s best to forget about using baking soda, it may be too harsh, especially for black or graphite sinks. If you want to keep your granite sink in good condition for a long time, you must remember to clean it properly and perform appropriate impregnation at least occasionally.
