How to Install a Bidet?

Bidet - an essential fixture in bathrooms in the Far East, is now increasingly appearing in Irish bathrooms as well. It is a practical device that facilitates intimate hygiene and enhances the standard of the bathroom. Manufacturers offer both floor-standing and wall-mounted bidets. Which model to choose? How to select the right tap? Where to install the device to ensure convenient access and comfort during use?

Floor-standing or wall-mounted bidet?

Bidet, toilet bowls, sinks, and other sanitary devices in the bathroom should maintain stylistic consistency. Therefore, when choosing a wall-mounted toilet bowl, you should opt for a wall-mounted bidet and vice versa. From the point of view of the functionality of both solutions, wall-mounted models are more advantageous. Above all, access to them and use are more convenient. They also make it easier to keep the bathroom clean because they allow access to every nook and cranny of the floor. Furthermore, they give a sense of more space, which is especially important in small rooms.

Wall-mounted bidets are installed on a full wall or a special in-wall frame, designed to handle heavy loads. This solution is not only safe but also elegant, enhancing the aesthetic qualities of the bathroom. Unfortunately, you must be prepared for slightly higher installation costs than with floor-standing bidets. When purchasing a bidet, it's worth checking if the bidet tap, siphon, and all necessary accessories are included. If not, depending on the construction of the bidet, appropriate installation elements need to be purchased. It is good if the product includes an installation manual that shows step by step how to attach the bidet to the wall or floor.

Bidet Installation

Installing a bidet requires prior water supply and sewage connection. The water is connected to the already installed bidet tap. Depending on the type of device, there are two ways to install it.

Wall-mounted bidet installation

For wall-mounted bidet installation, use an in-wall frame attached to the wall. Frames intended for bidets have a movable crossbar with mounting screws. It allows convenient height adjustment of the bidet bowl to match the height of the toilet bowl. A wall-mounted bidet can also be attached directly to the wall. However, this requires chiselling grooves in the wall for water supply and sewage connections, so you cannot use this solution in structural walls.

Floor-standing bidet installation

A floor-standing bidet should be pushed as close to the wall as possible and carefully stabilized. Next, attach the tap to the ceramic surface and connect it to the water using special hoses. A good quality bidet tap includes flexible connection hoses, an automatic stopper, and a perlator. After installing the tap, it's time to connect the siphon, appropriately selected for the type of bidet. The siphon should be placed in the bottom hole of the bowl and connected to the sewage outlet. Finally, use mounting screws to securely attach the stabilized bidet to the wall and floor.

Why install a bidet near the toilet bowl?

Planning the installation of a bidet should begin at the bathroom design stage. It allows for a thoughtful location of the device and the provision of water and sewage connections. The toilet bowl and bidet should be located next to each other and at the same level. This is not only for aesthetic reasons but, above all, for user comfort. To ensure the toilet and bidet are at the same height, it is best to choose models from the same manufacturer, as they have mounting screws at the same level. It is also important to maintain the appropriate distance from the side wall and between the devices to ensure a comfortable manoeuvring space from each side.

Due to the way of using the bidet - sitting on it facing or back to the tap - the distance of the toilet bowl from the bidet installation site should be no less than 30 cm. It is recommended that the distance from the front of this sanitary fixture to another piece of bathroom equipment is about 60 cm. It is also important to maintain the proper height of bidet installation. It is usually installed 40 cm from the floor. If the device is intended for people with disabilities, all parameters must be appropriately increased.

Choosing the right location for the bidet, maintaining the required distances from walls and other elements of bathroom equipment, proper installation of the bidet bowl, a matching siphon, and a suitably selected tap provide a guarantee of long, trouble-free use of the device.
